Last spring a neighbor and I split a batch of newly hatched chicks.  Mine started laying over a month ago and hers just laid their first egg yesterday.  Why?  We are really stumped.  We live a mile away from each other, so the weather is the same.  We buy the same feed from the same store.  We both let our chickens free-range for a large part of every day.  Seriously, we're having trouble finding differences in how we're treating our chickens, yet mine have laid 143 eggs and hers have laid one.   Anyone have any clues on what is going on?

Sounds to me like her chickens found some hidden spot to lay while they are ranging. I'll bet if she locks them up for a day or 2 she will find they are laying a lot more eggs than she thinks!
