Hello, all, been a while since I was on here.

Last Saturday my wife discovered that one of our laying hens hatched out ten chicks!  We had noticed that she was not going into the henhouse to roost at night but didn't know she was setting eggs under my overturned canoe. This is especially nice since our rooster, Fancy, was killed by a coyote just a few weeks before. So his legacy lives on!

I took them away from Mom and put them in a brooder under a heat lamp. They seem quite comfortable. Mom is, of course, a bit discombobulated but I expected that, even though I've never hatched out chicks before. Now MY mom is leaning on me to put Mother Hen in with the chicks.  I wouldn't know how to do that, and besides it seems like it would be a major PITA now.  I have no place to put them where Mom could keep them warm amd yet they'd all still be safe from predation. (The coyotes have backed off for this year but we have a couple of good sized stray cates that show up from time to time.)

Can I put Mom in with chicks? SHOULD I put Mom in with chicks? If so, how would I do it and why?

i would have to say yes, let mama do her thing. if they've been away from her for a while re-introduce her and watch what she does. she might go after them in a loving way or in a territorial way. i was raised around chickens my whole life growing up on a self sustained farm in idaho. i curently have a flock of hens wich i adore. i was tought mother nature knows best and works out accordingly. just keep an eye on them closely at first, and see if she'll still mother. if no, remove them. best luck
