By fresh grains you must mean sprouted for that is what would happen.

Yup.  I think MEN had an article on that.   You can sprout as much as you'd like, it can make up a fair portion of their diet.  It is good for completely confined chickens. 

I just feed them weeds, fresh kitchen scraps and stuff that is passing its prime (like bolting lettuce if I am not saving it for seed) from the garden.  It seems to me that it would be more effective just giving them the grains, but I don't know for sure.

I read in another magazine that a gentlemen threw grain seeds in a wood box and covered with burlap sacks, kept it watered and within 3 days he had fresh grains for the chickens to eat. Has anyone ever tried this?
