One of my grandmothers used to have coffee cans full of black sticky stuff sitting all around her veggie garden.  She had a fantastic garden and no money so I can assume she didn't spend money on pesticides etc.  This was over 40 years ago.

I have now gone completely organic and am learning (and struggling) with methods of pest control.  Does anyone know what might have been in these coffee cans?  I am currently trying vinegar and sugar.  It did catch some gnat looking bugs - it is still a little cool here so bugs are not too bad yet.  But the cats keep knocking them over and eating the goo.  I'll just end up with diabetic cats!!
