asphalt is simply oil (tar) mixed with rocks..    the oils will eventually disappear and your wall will crumble.

in warm climates...  the asphalt will be soft an unstable.  and truthfully.   it does not take much heat.    even 60 or 70 degree weather will "melt" it.    if you insulate it..  the problem may be compounded.     asphalt cannot be used as fill or anytype of structural load bearing material.

think of it like trying to use molasses to hold the rocks together...

I know it's strange to say but he's right, you dont want to use asphalt for any load-bearing job.We used to cut holes in the asphalt for wood deck supports and pour concrete piers.Code does not allow asphalt to be used for any load- bearing work,it gets too soft in warm weather.Thats why you see in the city concrete poured around any support that sticks out of asphalt.

There could be health risks also!     I would not use it.

Hi,

I've been trying to find a source for urbanite nearby but the closest thing I can find is some broken-up asphalt from an old parking lot.  I was wondering if this would be safe to use in a stem wall for a straw bale house I'm building.  Will it be strong enough mortared together with a lime/cement mix?  Will it off-gas anything nasty?  Will it matter if it does as long as I'm going to cover both the inside and outside with a lime/perlite stucco for added insulation?

Thanks ahead of time,

Tao
