A couple of new angles on urban chook keeping Options

The current economic crisis may have some upsides.  Might one argue economic necessity to keep, say, five layers as a source of protein for oneself and family?  We see community gardens develop under such circumstances.  Why not a community chicken coop?

Then again, there are companion animals and/or pets.  IMO, a chicken is much more companionable than an iguana or canary, and they are rather handsome birds in their own right. 

I'm sure someone has thought of both of these before, but I thought I'd toss them out for consideration.
