Mangles, etc? Options

Does/has anyone ever grown/grow mangles (beets?) carrots, etc. for their own animal feed? I am interested in doing this and would like more info. Found a great article in (is it okay to say here?? ) CountrySide magazine; but wanted to talk to a 'real person'. Thanks (Sorry.. I also posted this in gardening.. wasn't sure which would be better)

Have not done this myself bur I have seen it. Grow several acres of beets and Kale alternating rows or separate fields. Fence it off and let sheep and cattle at it a couple of rows at a time with electric fence. After they graze the tops off the frost will heave the roots out and then they eat them. Working up the field and putting down fertalizer at the same time.
