 Sarcasm alert!! The Week had a synopsis of an article in it on this nightcrawlers.

Apparently earth worms aren't doing the good we think they do, according to author Nico Eisenhaur as he told the BBC.com. Apparently they actually eat living, nitrogen-rich seeds and seedlings and kill the plants. In fact they may be playing a direct role in the reduction and extinction of certain native plants!! How horrible! I bet Monsanto makes a pesticide for that problem. If not, I'm sure they will.

I did read an article a while back that said that earthworms are causing damage... I think in Minnesota?  They said that they were eating all of the leaf litter in the forest and that it was harming native plants.   Here is some interesting reading that I found while trying to find the original article:  http://www.wvnps.org/earthworms.html
