My yard fills up with oak leaves every fall.  I rake them up to help control the tick population around the house.  I cannot put them in my regular compost pile because they make the compost too acidic and I am already fighting with acidic soil pH.

Right now I am composting them in a separate pile.  That's fine for the time being, but I'm just delaying my problem if I can't figure out something to do with the small mountain of compost I'm going to have in a few seasons' time.

Does anyone know some good uses for oak leaf compost???  I've got a few acid-loving plants (roses are I think and I'm planning to add blueberries next year) but I think supply is still going to outstrip demand.

Can I use them in the regular compost if I can find additives to equalize pH???  Can I add lime or ash (or something else) to the compost pile, or will that mess up the process???  Would it be sufficient to add lime or wood ashes to the finished compost???  At what rate???

Hi,

Start with lime or a small amount of wood ash. Lime takes a few years to totally break down so it's safer but ash is fine in small amounts. That said it's on to what amounts. I Googled it and gardenguides said 1/2 cup of wood ash per 3 ft square. Google it yourself and find more info. I use both depending on availability and need. I have over-ashed areas and they still don't grow some vegetables.

then,
