Hello all.  I have become interested in making biochar and was surprised to discover the search function on this list does not bring up any hits.  Are any of you making or using purchased biochar, and if so, what are your results?

I have recently moved into town and the "soil" on my property is heavy clay woth little vegetation growing in it.  I thought biochar along with lots of humus additions might improve it.  I'd love some ideas if any of you are making it as our town will not allow any open burning and I don't have a BBQ pit/grill.  Thanks.

Did you read the article Mother Earth News did? Can't remember the exact issue but could try to find it if you were interested....

Did some experiments last spring, dug a trench in the garden and burned some hay and smaller twigs and branches and then backfilled but I can burn openly in the garden here. I plan to do it again this spring. It probably would have been as good to do it in the fall, but I prefer doing it in the spring because everything is so much drier and apt to take off in the fall.

If you can't burn in the garden you could always go to a campsite and burn in the grills they provide, then use a metal bucket to transport the left over ashes. Just make sure you don't use walnut wood as it is supposed to bad for the garden.
