Part of a decent home inspection, whether done by someone hired or yourself, should be to turn on every faucet/spigot. This not only confirms they work, but also the drains... and allows for investigation into leaking plumbing which can lead to other problems.

Sampling should be done of at least one source... all if possible. With at least at a minimum of a home kit that can be purchased from a local home supply store with easy directions.

If you allow the water to run for some time, the bladder will empty... and the pump should turn on. If this doesn't occur something is wrong with the system and either a well company can be called... or if your handy the supplies can be acquired at the local home supply store. But the system should be checked in reverse to determine what the faulty pieces are. The professional associate at a local home supply store should be able to walk you through the system in reverse and give some basic advice to what the problem may be.

It would be terrible for you to go through the cost of pump replacement to determine a pressure gauge is not functioning properly...

I would also go through the process of testing the water first and I would also have a specialist test the functionality of the pump as replacing it might take up a lot of money.

I'm thinking of buying a house that has well water but it's a good possibility that this home has been vacent for 1 1/2 years. Are there any precautions I should take when turning the well back on after this amount of time? Should I go ahead and replace the pump now, I'm sure that not being used for this long cant be good for it.
