I was recently messing around with an older version of AutoCAD and found a tool that could prove useful. I know that not everyone has AutoCAD but it is very popular and some of the newer, less expensive CAD programs may have the same ability.

When performing shading/rendering of a modelled object it is possible to have the light source imitate the position of the sun. There is a place to input location by lat./long. or nearest city and also to input date and time.

You can model your house, tell the software where the house is located, input the date and time that you would like to test for and then get a visual representation of where the shadows fall.

You can do the same thing with SketchUP.  SketchUP is the free and easy to learn CAD package from Google.

If all you  need is a good tool to size the overhang shadow, this is a good and free one that does not require you to create a CAd model:
