Tank insulation Options

Instead of attaching insulation directly to the exterior of a hot water storage tank, would it be suitable, instead, to enclose the tank in a heavily insulated room ?

The only difference that I forsee is that the room would have a larger surface area than the tank and would therefore lose more heat given the same R-value of insulation.

Does anyone else see any problems with this approach ?

The main problem is that you must keep the wiring and the T&P valve cooler.

I just got done wrapping my hot water heater in an R8 blanket and I had to cut holes at the T&P valve and over the wiring panels to keep the temperatures of the key parts from getting too high.

The maximum temp for the T&P valve is probably quite high. 110F?

The wiring could be more of a problem with the switch part of the thermostat being the most sensitive. That is why the hot water heaters have minimal insulation over the parts.
