If you can get free 55 gal. drums, then use them in line.  Have them stepped down, the water coming into the highest one and flowing through the others.  Take the water out of the lowest.  Just be sure to use a roof washer or you will have a lot of sediment build up.

An idea I'm thinking of putting into action is an aboveground swimming pool filled by a roof water collection system.  The roof of my cabin is 26X24 feet, so for every foot of rain falling, my roof should collect about 4700 gallons of water.  If additional rain fall right into the pool itself, that's even more available water.  I won't use this water for drinking but for irrigating my orchard and garden.  The biggest hurdles to jump will be protecting the plumbing from freezing in winter, and keeping dead animals out of the water.  I'm checking craig's list occasionally for someone getting rid of a pool cheap.

I'm living in this old house in a small town in the Ozarks till I can fix it and move somewhere i can afford some land. There are so many retired people and weekend people buying up everything in the Ozarks I can't afford anything in the country. So wanting something to store water has the added problem that I will have to move it in a couple of years. I'm also cheap so I want something free or almost free. I'm wanting this to catch the runoff and have for garden and personal use so I need quit a bit of volume. Things can get pretty dry for quit a while in the Summer after flooding us in the Spring. I'm really thinking of something bigger than 55gal drums which is an option since I can get these at work now and then. Any ideas? Ken
