Workshop Description

A great garden starts with great seeds. Learn the pros and cons of different kinds of seeds, and discover the advantages of seeds bred for organic systems. You’ll learn when hybrids are a good choice, and why some heirloom seeds may not perform as well as they should. Presented by MOTHER EARTH NEWS Editors Cheryl Long, Shelley Stonebrook and Thaddeus Christian.

Speaker Bio for Cheryl Long

Cheryl Long is the editor in chief of MOTHER EARTH NEWS magazine, and a leading advocate for more sustainable lifestyles. She lives on an 8-acre homestead near Topeka, Kan., powered in part by solar panels, where she manages a large organic garden and a small flock of Welsummer chickens. Prior to taking the helm at MOTHER, she was an editor at Organic Gardening magazine for 10 years.

Speaker Bio for Shelley Stonebrook

Shelley joined the team in late 2009. She came to MOTHER EARTH NEWS after teaching English at the University of Kansas for three and a half years. At MOTHER, she heads up the Organic Gardening beat, works on the Vegetable Garden Planner, and posts in the Organic Gardening blog.

Speaker Bio for Thaddeus Christian

Thaddeus started with MOTHER EARTH NEWS in September of 2013. He is also a founding member of Pioneers Press, a publishing house focused on sustainability on the farm and in the city. After working in journalism, his interests turned toward forestry and small-scale agriculture. In a land without mountains, Thaddeus climbs trees, and enjoys backpacking, swimming and fermenting habaneros. In addition to a few acres of crops, he and his wife Jessie raise chickens, sheep, ducks, goats, and two rambunctious toddlers, Liam and Jack.
