The "Stoven"

How we built a cob oven and rocket stove hybrid.

During the coldest winter months, I like to place granite slabs on and beside my cast iron woodstove.

The granite holds the heat long after the fire has gone out, keeping the room warm until morning. It’s a great way to get the advantage of thermal mass from a high-mass soapstone stove without the high price tag.

Thermal mass has been and will be the key to efficient heating. even water can be used as a thermal mass. This is something that should be used in all homes! It reminds me of an automotive saying in the hot rod world......There's no replacement for displacement. So the greater the mass you can heat the greater the benefits! Glen
