Earth Gauge Tip of the Week: Be Penny-Wise and Water Smart

Tips on how to conserve water in the fall with weather-based irrigation controllers.

I was raised on a small farm during the ’40s and ’50s and I miss it every day. We were pretty much self-sufficient, growing almost everything we needed, from apples to homemade sorghum syrup to wheat for flour, using pure mule power. We raised our own food, including free-range chickens, which ate a lot of corn.

Not having many toys, I found that I could make my own. One such homemade toy was a “dart” set made of corncobs and chicken wing feathers.

With a large nail, poke two holes in the big end of a dry corncob. Insert the feathers into the holes, and — presto! — you have a fairly safe lawn dart.
