For those of us who haven’t gotten around to building a solar food dehydrator, I’ve discovered a great substitute: your gas oven with the pilot light on.

So far, I’ve dried apples, grapes and onions. I’ve found it’s also good for keeping crackers crisp and salt shakers running free. And it’s the perfect temperature for making yogurt.

The topic sounds interesting - an actual "how to" artilce would be nice. And by the way - I'm not sure about you, but have not had a pilot light in 20 years. Can you even buy an oven with a pilot light?

What temperature is your oven with the pilot light on? What is the best temperature for drying? What kind of racks (baking sheets?) do you use for drying? How long does it generally take (for apples, tomatoes, pears, etc.)? More information please!
