A Spring Terrarium: Grow Grass in a Day

Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnailHas spring come to your area? Here in Colorado, the daffodils are giving us spots of color, but the landscape is still mostly barren. I’m dying for a little life, which is why I love this project. This easy-to-make terrarium uses any old apothecary jar (easy to find at flea markets if you don't have one on hand) and quick-to-sprout wheat grass. I found it on A Soft Place to Land, a great website that connects people who love “things like spray paint, hot glue and sparkly buttons,” according to Kimba, the site's founder.

Kimba says this was a great project to do with her kids, and they all enjoyed watching the grass grow to fill the terrarium within 24 hours. Her son thinks they need a mini tractor to mow the grass, but Kimba says it can be cut with little scissors.

Materials

Old apothecary jar

Potting soil

Wheat grass or cat grass seeds (available at health food stores and online)

Directions

1. Put some potting soil into the bottom of the jar.

2. Spread wheat grass seeds on top of the soil and spritz with water.

3. Mist with water every few days and watch the grass grow.
