I learned everything I need to know about cleaning from my grandmother, who kept it simple. With these three steps in mind, spring cleaning is a breeze—and I can focus on spring fever's more exciting aspects (like planting my garden).

1. Keep it clean and dry. Mildew and bacteria reproduce where moisture is present, and they feed on dust, food, waste and urine spills. A little everyday maintenance goes a long way toward keeping your home clean and healthy.

2. Dust with a warm, damp cloth. Feather dusters stir toxins in the dust back into your air. Use a barely damp, warm cloth to remove dust. Don’t use hot water; it turns synthetic chemicals and other pollutants into vapors that can be inhaled.

3. Vinegar and baking soda can clean just about everything. Acidic vinegar kills germs and microbes; cuts grease, lime deposits and soap buildup; disinfects; deodorizes; removes stains and adds shine. Baking soda deodorizes, scours and remove smudges or scuffs. Made into a paste, it’s also great for cleaning ovens.

Good to see your article. Over the years I was overspending on all types of cleaning supplies. Using vinegar works very well (I see prices going up on this) and there are good instructions on the back of box of Borax, which I use instead of baking soda. The mixture also helps keep drains clean and smelling good.
