Monica Sharrock, Food Preservationist and Wild Game Enthusiast

Name: Monica SharrockMonica Sharrock Wild Game Enthusiast

Occupation: Monica works as an early childhood teacher and artisanal crafter. She moonlights as a food preservationist, DIY enthusiast, and cook of all things venison.

Place of Residence: Broken Bow, Oklahoma

Background and Personal History: Monica, 26, is from southeastern Oklahoma, an outdoorsman’s paradise. Married to avid hunter, Ryan, 27, she quickly became an expert at ways to prepare free-range venison (deer meat) in delicious, nutritious ways.

Monica grew up on garden produce and has learned to appreciate the art of food preservation from her father. She is passionate about storing garden produce using quick, easy methods, such as freezing. Monica believes natural is best, hence her family’s reliance on what they can grow and hunt.

Monica enjoys remodeling her 1980s ranch-style home. She and her husband have undergone a number of DIY projects, ranging from laying flooring to updating countertops. She also enjoys crafting artisanal wreaths for locals through her business, Shabby Sweet Creations.

Monica’s hobbies are gardening, cooking, crafting, reading, and being a mother to her golden retriever, Paws. She enjoys learning from other naturalists and is always finding inspiration from the Mother Earth News community.

Current Projects: Monica is excitedly preparing a tasty fall-food patch, adding glorious autumnal color to her flower garden, and canning delicious apple butter.

Monica and her husband are also working on saving cash to pay for building a non-conventional metal home on family property in about a year’s time. It should be a low-cost project that will allow them to simplify their lifestyle and get out of mortgage debt. While they will have help constructing the frame and pouring the concrete, the duo plans to do much of the interior themselves.

Other Fun Facts: Monica loves to antique and visit First Monday Trade Days in Canton, Texas. It is the best place to find one-of-a-kind hand-crafted items.

Monica married into a family of Oklahoma cowboys. Her husband and father-in-law are team ropers and have a cattle ranch complete with a roping arena.

More Places to Find Monica on the Web:  Monica recently brought Shabby Sweet Creations, her artisanal wreath and craft order business, onto the wonderful world of Etsy. This is still being developed, as she has been particularly busy lately with projects for friends and family.
