Lyndsay Dawson Mynatt, Wilderness Retreat Director

Name: Lyndsay Dawson Mynatt

Occupation: Lyndsay serves as the Program Director at Tall Timber Ranch, a Wilderness Christian Youth and Retreat Center in Leavenworth, Wash. She moonlights as a freelance journalist and adventure enthusiast—rock climbing, cycling, hiking, mountaineering, skiing, anything to spend time outdoors.

Background and Personal History:

Lyndsay grew up in the rolling hillsides of northeast Tennessee where her dad operated a small-scale dairy farm and her mother ran the 3rd-generation family sawmill business. Her family’s connection to the land inspired a reverence for the provisions of the ecosystem and a natural awe for the nooks and crannies to be discovered in the outdoors.

In 2009, Lyndsay completed a Master’s degree in Environmental Sociology at the University of Tennessee, with a focus on faith, specifically Christianity, as a basis for environmental stewardship.   Upon completion of her degree, she embarked with her newlywed husband on a 5-month thru-hike of the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. The trail was an avenue from which she and her husband heard their calling to launch into adventure wilderness ministry. Lyndsay has been serving as the Program Director at Tall Timber Ranch in Leavenworth, Wash., since 2010, and enjoys exposing kids to natural wonders and teaching them to be stewards of the creation through simple living and homesteading principles.

Current Projects: Similar to hiking for five months, homesteading has been a process of forward movement. The past five years have been an experiment of gardening, canning, raising chickens, grinding our own grains, baking bread, foraging for wild edibles, brewing kombucha, brewing beer and hard cider, hosting cider pressing parties, making old-fashioned apple butter, a range of DIY projects, and developing from-scratch recipes, including: cheese, mayonnaise, sauerkraut, yogurt, broth, and much more.

Other Fun Facts: I have been featured in the 2011 documentary of the PCT, Six Million Steps: A Journey Inward.
