, which produces food for more than 1,000 families in the Chicago area. Recently, those shareholders helped the farm acquire 38 adjacent acres.

Farmer John and the crew at Angelic Organics have also written a quirky cookbook: Farmer John's Cookbook: The Real Dirt on Vegetables. It provides hundreds of seasonal recipes from CSA members and farmers, and most of them offer new ways of preparing the familiar: Baked Cucumbers in Basil Cream, Saut?ed Radishes with Arugula, Sweet Zucchini Crumble. But there is much more than recipes in the cookbook's 360 pages, including comments from the cooks, letters from CSA members, excerpts from Farmer John's weekly newsletter, essays by nutrition experts and even a few poems. These tidbits spice up the basic fare and offer readers the flavor of an unusual and admirable farm.

The Real Dirt on Farmer John, which has earned numerous awards, will be available on DVD in 2007. Learn more at www.angelicorganics.com or www.therealdirt.net. To order Farmer John's Cookbook: The Real Dirt on Vegetables, visit MotherEarthShopping.com.

Hello mother earthI live in Australia and I continually see the
pverty of USA farmers in small towns in various media artciles over
the years. If the USA could gtev over its HEMPlunacy, then the
farming sector there and here could be revived and given its huge
bio diesel potential let alone its 101 other uses, farms in the USA
could become real businesses again, plus reduce imports by hundred
of billions of dollars per year.I was in the middle east last week
for work and even there the normal people I spoke with see the USA
like I do as a contradiction in terms. It was interesting because I
say to people when overseas lets look at what we have in common and
not what we have that is different. You claim to be a first world
country, but have labour rates for the low end lower than australia
and Canmada. Compared to here a very poor social security system
and people work 7 years to gte 3 weeks of holidays when in
Australia its 4 week from day one, and I am an employer and agree
with this.Plus you spend 14% on healthcare , pay twice what we do
for the same drugs and operations and we we spend 8% of GDP and we
live 3+ years longer on average than people in the USA.It would be
good for Americans and the world if you had things more like Europe
and Australia and it does not cost a fortune.Regardstom

Pleased to hear the heartwarming story on #farmer John but he
had better watch out for the actions of the FDA, "guardian" of US
organic standards. It has just been asked to retrospectively
approve a variety of genetically modified rice from Bayer test sown
in open fields some years back and now known to have contaminated
organic and non-organic conventional varieties. Much information on
the characteristics of this rice, never commercially grown, has
been concealed. If approved, it will deal a heavy blow to organic
    farming in the US.
