Government Program Seeks to Tag EVERY Livestock Animal in the U.S.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is embarking upon a new program that seeks to have every single livestock animal in the United States identified, tagged and possibly implanted with a radio chip. The highly controversial National Animal Identification System (NAIS) would require anyone who owns even one livestock animal ? such as a pigeon, rabbit, chicken or horse ? to register that animal and its location in a federal database.

The USDA maintains that the program could help track and contain disease outbreaks. But livestock owners criticize the USDA's intentions, claiming that this is just another federally supported benefit for large-scale 'factory farm' producers, whose animals are the most at risk for disease outbreaks. In addition, the NAIS will place a financial burden on small-scale livestock owners, and invade individual privacy, to boot. Currently, enrollment in NAIS is voluntary, but the program is scheduled to become mandatory by 2009.

Mandatory Premises ID registration and the USDA's proposed
National Animal Identification System (NAIS) are dead in Vermont!
    See this article for more
    details:http://nonais.org/index.php/2006/08/18/vt-premises-id-killed/In
a nutshell, which is where these programs belongs, the Vermont
Agency of Agriculture (AoA) has finally heard the enormous protest
against the program and said they are letting the proposal for
mandatory Premises ID expire and will not share information with
the feds thus killing NAIS at the same time.It is unnecessary to
violate our rights and privacy in order to control animal disease.
The government should focus on education and being polite. The VT
AoA is one 800 lb guerilla that just learned it can't sit anywhere
    it pleases.

Today your livestock and tomorrow what, humans? This all started
out as voluntarily and suddenly became manditory (sp?)when they
discovered how they could use it. Are Americans so complacent that
they are going to let government do this? Why not since we have set
back and let the politicians give themselves a pay raise every year
and yet haven't raised the hourly wage. Just keeping the people who
drive the country down where they are supposed to be according to
the people at the top of the scale. The politicians are treating us
as much like livestock as they are our livestock!!! Make a move
people of America! Y. Short, Clyde, TX

I agree with every comment i have seen here so far.We have to
start writing letters and making noise.I will resist and won't
voluntarily submit. You will one day face being taxed for growing
your own garden, taxed and fined because you won't use monsantos'
seeds, or tax and fined so you can't afford to grow your own food.
I am sure if they got to chip your animals and you submit to
register your property for satellite surveilence.......there will
be more trouble to come.If they do this, what do you think is
next?Don't rule out the possibility of being chipped yourself. This
is a very powerful tool for government and agribiz. This can create
unforseen events. This HAS to be stopped. It has no place outside
    of factory farms and feedlots.

Animals shouldn't be implanted with micro computerchips it's
inhumane, the more sovereign citizenship world wide, the more we can
avoid having to obey big brother. The next thing will be people
walking around with implanted chips so that the government can
    control the population.

WJeffries - thanks for the website link! I have passed it on to
friends. Let's speak out against NAIS while we still can!

  • EDWARD SMITH 4/19/2006 12:00:00 AM

Wow I have watched our rights as private citizens of these
United States of America decline rapidly in the last ten years. I
have finally seen it all. Is any one alarmed that the nutritional
facts about mass produced food of any kind are so different than
natural grown that we should all be screaming about it. Now the
food scource is so unhealthy that we need to track every critter
that could be considered "livestock". I am shocked that people are
finally starting to see what is happening to our food source that
is supposed to be keeping us healthy. With the staggering rise in
obesity, diabetes, cancer, Etc. How can anyone be suprised? Now
those of us that choice to raise a small amount of live stock to
feed our selves and maybe a friend are going to be made to suffer
the consequence of the greed of the large mas produce factories of
"food" by having to register our animals. Again I say
    WOW!

  • Nina Rourk 4/18/2006 12:00:00 AM

This is something that has many in the canine community upset.
USDA considers dogs "livestock" and therefore fall under the same
rules as "livestock". The implications here are unthinkable, to say
nothing of this applying to cats and other types of pets. This is a
    scary situation.

  • Walter Jeffries 4/18/2006 12:00:00 AM

This is being pushed through on a state by state basis with the
USDA driving it. There is no need for NAIS outside of the anonymous
wholesale commercial food production like factory farms and
feedlots. NAIS should be kept 100% voluntary and simply be market
driven. We don't need heavy handed government mandates shoved down
our throughts. Fight this. Go visit http://NoNAIS.org and find out
what you can do to stop NAIS.

  • GINA Fleming 4/18/2006 12:00:00 AM

As a horse owner, I DO feel that this program invades my
privacy. My neighbors and friends, who are small farm owners, would
encur significant expense tagging all of their chickens, turkeys,
ducks, and cows. Furthermore, identification of horses is imprecise
and impractical - microchips implanted under the skin have been
known to migrate and/or build up enough scar tissue to become
unreadable. Branding or tagging my horse would be painful and would
take away from his natural beauty. I, for one, don't plan to
register my horse unless the USDA comes knocking on my
    door.
