EVEN AFTER ALL THIS...

No matter what you do, though, you're still going to need the help of a veterinarian from time to time . . . to treat a cow with indigestion, a sow in trouble at farrowing time, or a horse down with colic. Such problems, and others, will plague even the most careful homesteader.

And, when you do get that vet bill, be satisfied in the knowledge that you did all you could for your charges. Then, settle down with a copy of James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small (St. Martin's Press, 1972), which—besides showing you the vet's side of the problem will give you a lot of laughs at a time when you really need them.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Information on many facets of livestock care can be found in the following articles-by veterinarian Randy Kidd-that have run in previous issues of this publication. 1. "Restrain That Beast!", MOTHER NO. 52, page 84.

 2. "You Can Too Give That Animal an Injection!" ; MOTHER NO. 53, page 92.

 3. "Be Your Own `Animal Medicine Man'", MOTHER NO. 54, page 76.

4. "Restrain and Medicate Your Homestead Horse", MOTHER NO. 55, page 74.

 5. "How to Deal With Internal Parasites", MOTHER NO. 56, page 76 . . . and No. 57, page 56.

 6. "Ten Commandments for Healthy Livestock", MOTHER NO. 58, page 72.

7. "Dog and Cat Medication", MOTHER NO. 59, page 48.

8. "Ten Commandments for Sheep Care" ; MOTHER NO. 60, page 162.

These back issues of MOTHER can be ordered-for $3.00 apiece plus $1.00 shipping and handling per order from THE MOTHER EARTH NEWS ® , P.O. Box 70, Hendersonville, North Carolina 28739.

You'll also want to read Dr. Kidd's discussion of homestead rabbits that begins on page 80 of this magazine.
