Denis Hayes chairs the American Solar Energy Society board of trustees. He’s president of the Bullitt Foundation, was national coordinator of the first Earth Day, and chair emeritus of the International Earth Day Network. During the Carter administration, Hayes was director of the federal Solar Energy Research Institute (now called the National Renewable Energy Laboratory).
