With state laws pushing power companies to buy more green energy, the Center for Resource Solutions has stepped in to independently verify energy sources. Its Green-e Renewable Energy Certification program audits about half of the renewable energy sold by the nation’s green power providers, according to Green-e analyst Lars Kvale. “If you want to be sure that the energy product you buy is a legitimate green energy product, look for ‘Green-e Certified,’” Kvale says.
About half the country can purchase green power from the electric utility serving their state or region. If your utility doesn’t offer green tags, consider buying into RECs or carbon offset programs, such as those offered by NativeEnergy and TerraPass. With these programs, you can calculate how much CO2 you are responsible for and purchase credits to offset that amount.
