LOUISVILLE MAKES 'GREAT PLACES YOU'VE (MAYBE) NEVER HEARD OF' LIST
National magazine honors city’s commitment to home gardening and green development
TOPEKA, Kan. (Jan. 4, 2011) — Louisville, Ky., has earned a spot on Mother Earth News’ fifth annual “Great Places You’ve (Maybe) Never Heard Of” list. Mother Earth News, the leading magazine dedicated to sustainable living, features six communities in its February-March issue, on sale Jan. 25.
Even with a population of 569,135, Louisville has a small-town feel. The 15Thousand Farmers organization recruits new residential food gardeners with a simple tool-kit approach based on the square-foot gardening model. Monthly get-togethers build community among members and provide access to gardening experts for further information.
Louisville embraces sustainable building, too. It features an extensive system of pedestrian-only streets, multiple green roofs, and the “NuLu” arts district houses the city’s first LEED-certified building.
“Louisville‘s community-wide support for home gardeners and attention to green building and development are inspiring,” says Alison Rogers, assistant editor for the magazine. “Mother Earth News focuses on cool things you can do to live wisely and create community, and we think our readers will identify with a place like Louisville.”
The annual Great Places list serves as a fun way to recognize cities and towns that demonstrate positive civic energy, invest in the local economy and develop meaningful initiatives for the environment.
Other cities making this year’s list are Huntsville, Ala.; Elgin, Ill.; Carrboro, N.C.; Fredericksburg, Texas; and Floyd, Va.
