First Mother Earth News Fair draws big crowd Event attendance almost doubles expectations, exhibitors connect with customers

TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 27, 2010) — The first Mother Earth News Fair attracted twice the number of attendees the organizers expected, and filled Pennsylvania’s Seven Springs Resort to capacity.

Mother Earth News, the largest and longest-running publication about sustainable, self-sufficient lifestyles, held its inaugural Mother Earth News Fair Sept. 25-26 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort, outside of Pittsburgh.

Fair directors expected 5,000 attendees for the weekend. However, at least 9,000 people from as far as California and the Florida Keys visited the workshops, vendor demonstrations and booths, musical performances and food tastings.

The Mother Earth News Fair featured programming about green building, renewable energy, organic gardening, real food, DIY projects, small-scale livestock farming, homesteading, natural health, green transportation and related topics.

Organizers said green building, renewable energy, beekeeping and cheese-making demonstrations were some of the most popular programs.

“Our attendees’ enthusiasm is a powerful source of inspiration for us,” said Bryan Welch, publisher and editorial director of Mother Earth News.

About 160 vendors promoted renewable home energy systems, energy-saving products, garden plants and supplies, electric vehicles, outdoor power equipment and furniture, livestock equipment and breeds, natural clothing and cosmetics, and more.

“Several exhibitors told us they ran out of samples or products about halfway through the first day because, like us, they underestimated the crowds that would attend,” Welch said.

Central Boiler, Long Creek Herbs, Mother Earth Resources Co-op, My Amish Goods, New Society Publishers, Polaris, Stonyfield Farm, Storey Publishing and Toyota sponsored the event.

The staff at Mother Earth News oversaw all planning and organization for the Fair, including programming, on-site staffing and waste management. Seven-Star Inc. provided production and sales support.

As part of the Fair’s greening efforts, organizers recycled 5,100 pounds of cardboard and 680 pounds of glass, plastics and aluminum. The event composted 10,550 pounds of food and packaging waste, and diverted 370 gallons of greywater from the water table.

The magazine plans to roll out additional fairs across the country in 2011.
