Mother Earth News Fair will illuminate
renewable energy options
15-plus workshops show how to design and build solar and alternative fuel projects at home
TOPEKA, Kan. (Aug. 26, 2010) — Do you want to save money on your monthly utilities but aren’t sure whether solar is worth it? Are you concerned about coal- and petroleum-based fuel’s environmental costs? Renewable energy is gaining traction as a reliable alternative but still may be confusing.
At the Mother Earth News Fair, slated for Sept. 25-26 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort near Pittsburgh, clean energy lovers of all levels can choose from more than 15 hands-on demonstrations and seminars on everything from a beginner’s guide to passive solar design to building your own budget-friendly electric car.
Scheduled renewable energy-related speakers and topics include:
- Dan Chiras – introduction to solar electricity; passive solar electricity; passive solar heating; experts’ panel
- James Dunn – personal experience with a geodesic dome solar greenhouse
- Richard Freudenberger – small-scale alcohol fuel; basic passive solar design; experts’ panel
- John Ivanko – powering your home with renewable energy
- Angus Macdonald – DIY construction of solar and energy-efficient homes and garden structures
- Ben Nelson – building your own electric car, cheap
- Greg Pahl – community-supported energy; experts’ panel
- Darree Sicher – alternative fuel uses for sewage sludge
- Michael R. Wurzbacher – masonry heaters, stoves and ovens
- Brad Yocum – why now is the time to go solar
The Mother Earth News Fair will offer more than 200 sessions on renewable energy, green building and remodeling, DIY projects, homesteading, green transportation, organic gardening, real food, natural health, small-scale livestock, and related topics.
Attendees also can take part in vendor, livestock and craft demonstrations; a green shopping pavilion; a seed swap; artisan food tastings; children’s projects; live music; and local and organic food offerings.
