Craft a Backdoor Bootjack

Learn how to make a bootjack from a branch and scrap of wood.

I live at a retirement complex, and the space I have for gardening is a narrow strip around my patio. As you can imagine, I don't have room for composting equipment or even a compost pile. However, I've figured out a way to make rich garden soil.

Each fall, I borrow a post-hole digger and make holes all over my garden space. From fall until spring, I deposit all kitchen vegetable scraps in the holes and cover them over when they are filled. When spring arrives, I have nutrient-rich garden soil — no equipment needed.
