Early American Beans
Columbus and other early explorers found Native Americans planting beans in their corn gardens (where the corn stalks acted as natural trellises), and many older, shade-tolerant, long-vining bean varieties are still available from companies that sell heirloom seeds. These early American beans are picked when the pods are full with immature beans. Stringing the beans is a mandatory step in their preparation.

As far as I can remember I have been growing different kind of
green beans, for over 50 years when my Mother was always keeping a
garden. It is easy and rewarding if you are choosing the right
variety for your region. May be I'm a bit out of the subject, what
I really do not understand and it"s getting worse every year.Vege
gardening is fun and relaxing, but how can the vegetables that are
travelling for an average 1500 miles, plus the price of gas, all
the expenses, the staff, and still they are able to flood the
supermarket with price half of what it's costing us.First you have
to own some piece of land, we need to care about our soil, buy the
seeds, water once in a while, how can they be selling so
    cheap.Gardening yoursPhilippe DemetsMarkham, Ont.
