Country Lore: A tip for getting beet seeds to germinate

For years I had trouble getting my beet seeds to germinate. Then, an old friend told me to spread the seed on a piece of wax paper and go over it with a rolling pin. This crushes the outside husks, which makes it easier for the seed to get started. For the first time in ten years, all my beets came up!
