Miss Stout advocated planting under a deep natural straw mulch that would discourage weeds, retain moisture, and keep soil temperature at a moderate level. This had an added benefit: it would also, if fed with a little cottonseed meal, eventually decay into naturally rich soil nutrients.

If fluffed and refreshed periodically, the straw also kept produce clean, and both bug and slug-free. It protected everything from bush peas and beans to tomatoes and eggplant as well as both sweet and Irish potatoes. The latter develop a smaller-than-normal crop of tubers right at soil level under a heavy mulch. These are easily grown and harvested.
