Sept. 27 through Oct. 2, PBS will present The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. It’s a six-part series about the discovery of the United States’ grand wilderness areas and the creation of the national parks system that protects them — the first of its kind in the world.

The story of the parks and those who have loved and fought to protect them is full of adventure, both in the wild and in the tug-of-war between conservationists and developers. The series is set against a backdrop of triumphant old-growth trees and towering mountains, ruddy canyons, rushing waterfalls and exploding geysers.
