Every year, Americans add to landfills millions of tons of electronics that contain toxic materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, lithium and PVC. Consumers who want to recycle their e-waste often must pay recycling centers a fee to take the items. This year, Maine became the first state to require television and computer monitor manufacturers to pay these fees. In addition to curbing pollution, Maine’s new law encourages manufacturers to produce safer, easier-to-recycle products. For more information, visit www.maine.gov/dep/rwm/ewaste/index.htm.
