According to a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, a significant number of Americans would support an increased gasoline tax if it could reduce global warming or dependence on foreign oil. Of more than 1,000 adults polled, 55 percent said they would support an increase that would reduce America’s reliance on foreign oil, while 59 percent supported a tax that would decrease global warming pollution. Currently, the 18.4-cent federal gas tax subsidizes highway maintenance.
