Both Earl and his neighbor, photographer Robert Hunt, came to Oregon from California in the early 1970s. I asked them what sort of welcome new migrants to the Willamette Valley will find.

"They'll feel it's a friendly place," Robert replied. "The key is to just be yourself."

"And you can be yourself here," Earl added. "That's what Oregon's all about. I guess the only thing Oregonians are intolerant of is intolerance."
