EDITOR'S NOTE: We'd like to extend our thanks to two Asheville, North Carolina bicycle shops that have given invaluable information and assistance in the preparation of this article. J.M. Hearn & Company, a regular stop for, MOTHER's street riders, has offered advice freely and even lent us its mechanic — a local bicycle motorcross expert — for photographs. Liberty Corner Bicycles, the local haven for mountainbike enthusiasts, has taught us much about the design and workings of the machines and has been there when we needed inner tubes, cables, and the like.
