This rather more time-consuming procedure may offer a theoretical advantage in compacting the soil and protecting the roots. But a seedling, if it has been properly cared for before planting, is a rugged individual whose survival rate is a matte of some amazement for most amateurs. The tractor-drawn planting machine is of course the fastest method—and probably the only economical one—of planting large areas. But there are few more satisfying rewards than the sight of straight-ranked young pines and one's own private boast that "I planted you all with my own two hands."
