PLOWBOY: Why is that?

SHUTTLEWORTH: Because we're only trying to change the world completely! Because the alternatives and environmental publications are pioneering new ground. It always takes more energy to walk point than it does to stay back in the herd.

PLOWBOY: You make it sound pretty rough.

SHUTTLEWORTH: It is rough! And I'm emphasizing the point because I think the world has, at best, maybe 15 years to get off the energy-intensive trip we've put it on. I'm convinced we've got no more than 15 years to completely change the way we run this planet.

Now that's a big job and some of us old-timers who've been giving it everything we've got for five years are getting tired. We're looking for a second squad to come in and relieve us. We need replacements for the Clear Creeks and the Environmental Qualities and the Earth Times that aren't being published anymore. And we need the cream of the cream, people who are just flat-out looking for the hardest, most exhausting challenge available anywhere. I want individuals like that to know we've got more work than they can get done. Right here. This is it. The pay isn't much, but this is the biggest and the most important and the most challenging game in town.

PLOWBOY: All right. Maybe I'm your man. Let's say I want to start a bright, new environmental publication. Where do I begin?

SHUTTLEWORTH: OK. Here's where we get to that "positioning" I promised I'd explain. Next to unbelievable quantities of hard work on the part of a lot of people, this is the secret of Mother Earth News' success.
