COPERTHWAITE: It's hard to know . . . that sort of thing usually has to be taken on faith. You live the best life you can, but you don't know whether what you do will make the world a better place . . . in fact, it's presumptuous to think that your little effort will do so. Yet, at the same time, it is important to see that your little bit may be just the amount needed to turn the balance. You have no way of knowing how much your weight will tip the scales, but you can choose which side it goes on.
