IRRIGATION: POND, SIPHON, AND DRAINPIPE CONSCIOUSNESS July/August 1977 by DAVID HAENKE: Dear friend...
Significant leakage is usually due to excessively porous soil. Sandy soil, gravel, shale, and ledge in the basin can cause leakage. Good pond soil usually contains 10 to 20% clay, sometimes more. It's not uncommon for a pond basin to include good clay soil and more porous material. Water leaks through the pervious soil, and that's where repairs should be made.
