The issue of whether an owner-builder is permitted to do his own wiring is the subject of local determination. The National Electrical Code is silent on the matter. Some municipalities allow self-builders and homeowners to do their own wiring, others permit do-it-yourselfers to perform such work but impose a considerable fee for the privilege, and still others prohibit anyone but licensed electricians from doing the job.
