Megan Hirt, Assistant Editor
Megan hails from Topeka, Kan., and recently graduated from the University of Kansas with degrees in Journalism and French. She first entered the world of Mother Earth News in summer 2007 as an editorial intern, and is now on board as an assistant editor.
Megan’s duties at the magazine primarily include working on the website — keeping the home page in shape, posting content, writing content, preparing e-newsletters, and managing the Mother Earth News Facebook page. For the magazine, she edits articles at various stages and recently took over the Crop at a Glance department.
While at the University of Kansas, Megan won second place in the nation in the 2009 Hearst Journalism Foundation intercollegiate in-depth writing competition for her story A Sobering Struggle, which profiled college students who have alcoholism. In April 2009, Megan was named one of the nation’s top 100 college journalists by UWIRE, a wire service for college newspapers. Working with words and language has long been her passion, so working for a magazine that lets her use this passion to inspire self-sufficiency is one of the most rewarding professions she can think of.
Aside from writing, editing, reading or otherwise getting lost in the lure of language, Megan’s favorite things include dance (watching it, dancing it or attempting to dance it — any style from ballet to break dancing), the sky, summer, brightly colored scarves, psychology, traveling, and the Mother Earth News editorial team.
