John Rockhold, Managing Editor

John Rockhold joined the Mother Earth News team in 2002. Today he’s the managing editor — which means a lot of things, but in a nutshell he’s responsible for the processes and schedules which make the magazine, website and newsletters happen.

Always on the go, John also is the lead editor for the magazine’s green transportation category. John has written or edited dozens of articles on gasoline-electric hybrids, electric cars, biofuels, maximizing gas mileage, public transportation and more. He’s had significant time behind the wheel in nearly every hybrid car available today, including the Toyota Prius, the new and old models of the Honda Insight, the Ford Escape Hybrid and the Toyota Camry Hybrid. His dream green car garage changes as the options evolve, but the ultimate hope is all-electric cars (one sedan, one two-seater) powered by solar panels and/or a wind turbine. For now, though, he’s proud of the 35+ mpg he eeks out of his 2001 Honda Civic and is always looking to make his home more energy efficient.

John is also proud to call Kansas home (don’t believe the stereotypes you hear) and grew up with a mixture of country (his grandmother’s cattle farm in rural southeastern Kansas) and city life (Kansas City, Kan.). A lifelong Jayhawk, he graduated from the University of Kansas in English and Magazine Journalism.

John’s other areas of special interest at work include wolves, wilderness, energy independence, renewable energy and the wisdom of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
