Because these are the first clean diesel vehicles offered in the United States, meeting the federal requirements for "advanced lean-burn-technology motor vehicles," they qualify for federal tax credits ranging from $900 to $1,800.

    Plenty of older cars achieved much better mileage than what is offered to us today. They think we have no capacity to remember cars like the old Geo Metro and others.
    We seem to be moving backwards here,....
    Again, I say,....why is it that cars in Europe get significantly better MPG than their counterparts in the USA?
    Somebody needs to slap down the rules that keep the truly efficient cars from our shores.

    I've been a little puzzled by the fuss about the Prius and new Jetta's mileage. I have a 1999 Saturn SL1 sedan that gets 40-43 mpg. It's been a great car!
