Ileya Stewart tests the Panasonic E-Hybrid on a steep hill
in Willits, California (at left). The electric-assist
automatically amplifies her pedal effort to easily tackle
hills that would challenge a regular-bicycle rider. Mike
Saari of Palo Alto, California, sits on an EVSkeeter, a
recumbent bicycle he built (at right). With its 800-watt
Heinzmann hub motor and battery pack, the bike can travel
30 miles on a single charge and climb hills at 15 mph. It
fully recharges on 7 cents of electricity.
