It’s a common scene across America: frustrated homeowners living in despair, weary of deer destroying their gardens and landscapes. Now, Havahart®, the leading producer of humane products designed to send nuisance wildlife packing, is launching a nationwide “Deer John” contest in search of the best, most heart-felt break-up letter. Did deer destroy your prized perennial garden? Graze on your geraniums the night before your daughter’s backyard wedding reception?  If so, Havahart wants to hear about it.  Submit a “Deer John” letter explaining why it’s time to end your relationship with Bambi; the  best, most heart-felt letter will be awarded $300, with $200 and $100 awarded for 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.  Ten runner-ups will each receive a Havahart Deer Off® Repellent prize package. The contest runs through Sept. 22, 2013.

“Dear John” letters originated during WWII when disgruntled wives left their husbands in the course of a few paragraphs, with classic phrases like “It’s not you, it’s me,” “I’ve found someone else,” and the quickest exit of all: “Dear John, goodbye.”

“Homeowners across the country invest countless hours and dollars into creating beautiful gardens and outdoor spaces only to have their landscapes destroyed by deer,” says Alison Girschick, Category Development Associate at Havahart. “While Havahart is committed to humane wildlife control, we understand the absolute frustration deer can cause.  We decided it was high time to give homeowners a forum to vent their angst.”

The “Deer John” contest rules are simple. “Write a short letter or poem to let Havahart know your ‘grounds for divorce’ with your deer invaders,” says Girschick. “Break-up stories addressing rabbits, squirrels and other backyard invaders will also be accepted. This is an equal opportunity contest and no woodland creatures will go unrecognized.”
