Standard parts-washer solvent is quite expensive (it usually goes for better than $7.50 per gallon), but the cost of filling the unit can be trimmed considerably. For example, there's no reason for the whole reservoir to be filled with the cleaning fluid ... since it's unlikely that more than a few gallons will see action at one time. Consequently, you can fill the tank partially with water. Because the petroleum products are lighter than water, the H20 sinks to the bottom, and the working fluid rises to the top.

Of course, the submersible pump needed a source of electricity, so a metal electrical box was screwed to the right side of the basin (under the lip) and a combination toggle switch and duplex receptacle was installed. The circulator's hot wire passes through the switch on its way to a wall outlet, allowing the pump to be turned on and off. In addition, the receptacle next to the control offers a ready outlet for any work done in the basin. (To provide safety in the event of splashes, the box has. a weatherproof cover.)
All told, we've invested just a little more than $100 in our parts-washing tank . . or approximately half of the price of the closest (smaller!) competition. And, by trimming the cost by that amount, we've managed to turn a dreamed-about luxury into a practical addition to the workshop.
